Board information - Compustat / Execucomp

Not all databases provide information on executive boards, governance or any other relevant board information. This post will seek to provide an overview of some databases that do.

Compustat / Execucomp (WRDS databases)
Compustat North America has got a sub database called Execucomp (executive compensations). Its main aim is to provide information on remunerations, pensions, awards etc. for executives from American companies.
Compustat Global does unfortunately not have such a database.

The data can be very specific and detailed. Understanding of executive compensations might be of great help. I'll stick to Annual compensations (which are things like salary and bonusses etc.)
Unless you upload a file you have to look up companies manually. Comopany Identifiers used in execucomp are most often GVKEY, Ticker, CUSIP, SIC (industries)  (there may be vatiations) and an id identifying the executive ??

Example: Annual Compensation

Getting meta data on the executives (not the remunerations)

Step 1
First set your desired Time window in Step 1.
This specific database deals with annual data, hence the data options.

Step 2
You can manually look for companies or upload lists of

When working with a workset within WRDS the most commonly used identifier will be the GVKEY.

Use this link and another menu opens with a Browse button (bladeren)
Click this and an expplorer screens opens where you can select your file.
Note: be certain to store your identifier in a single file as the system doesn't recognise composed files.
The format has to be a TXT file.
Select your file.

Select the radio box GVKEY in STEP 2 (GVKEY)

Press "Contains" this way you are save from exact phrases / search terms

Select e.g. GVKey codes and > Add to list (this implies you can search for more than one company at a time)

Press button add codes to querry (brings back to th general menu)

Step 3: Selecting variables
First section : general company info (name, location etc)
Second section: executive information

(meta data ececutives)
Dowload output: recommended is saving as as TXT file (eithjer fixed width or tab delimited)
Save with right click on the TXT link

Opening in Excel calls up a wizard.

Continue untill this screen. Scroll all the way to the right and Shift-click to select all columns. Confirm the text file with the radio button text (top left of the wizard)

Result:

The meta data can basically be downloaded from any section in Execucomp.
Finacial data can be downloaded for a stretch of years, and Execucomp  provides much information.

But there are other board structures and functions.
Think of auditors and various committees.

Board Information - Audit analytics

Not all databases provide information on executive boards, governance or any other relevant board information. This post will seek to provide an overview of some databases that do.

Audit analytics
AA is a database that focusses on auditor in formation. This could be auditor opinion, auditor changes, -affiliations etc. Either it'spossible to search the datbase manually, or use so-called CIK codes.*
Best is to download CIK codes from a database like Compustat.
Compustat North America: (all that apply)
Compustat Global:fundamentals annual, -quarterly and securities daily

When  you're done downloading open the file and copy the CIK codes into memory with CTRL-C or right click - copy. Next open Audit analytics and e.g. select auditor opinion > choose select company search  and paste the copied CIK into the field that appears using CTRL-V.

Next screen: search by TICKER or CIK

Press button link

You can save the results

(or check by opening the hits)

This enables checking the opinions, but also to o check SEC filings etc.

Examples:

and SEC

Auditor changes can be monitored in  a similar fashion. The principles of Audit analytics work throughout the entire database.

* CIK:
Central Index Key is a code given to an individual or company by the United States Securities and
Exchange Commission. The number is used to identify the filings of a company, person, or
entity in several online databases, including EDGAR.Audit analytics among them.

Board information - Amadeus, Bankscope, REACH

Not all databases provide information on executive boards, governance or any other relevant board information. This post will seek to provide an overview of some databases that do.

Bureau van Dijk databases (Amadeus, Bankscope, REACH > focus: Europe) offer (in varying levels) board information that can be downloaded.
The method, however, does not vary.

  1. Make e.g. selections region: Germany, Netherlands, status: active, stock data: listed, legal form: public
  2. Press list of results (bottom)
  3. Open any company
  4. On the right side a new menus is presented, also with directors, managers, auditors, bankers etc information.(and maybe ownership info)

Choose previous for historic executives.
The options link is important in the presented list.
Confirm. Unfold for more info on the executive (check)
It is possible to limit the out to

Directors works the same.

When you press the option sections (top bar) you can add extra information to the directors information.

Next screen:
If you want to export directors info press the option on screen, otherwise it will not be saved.

How to save all of this?

Export the data with X icon from the top bar
Select The output format. Maybe because of the specific sub database, not possible as text
A pop-up shows to select the save directory.

Be certain to use OPTIONS or else you will only download one record (the first)
There is a max number of downloadable records (50), so when using large worksets might result in many repeats.
THE CHOICE ALL INFO FOR EACH FILTERED DIRECTORS CAN RESULT IN VERY LARGE OUTPUT SETS.

If you wish you can save each company on a separate file.

Result

Each company gets another sheet
When downloading (called Export in Bureau van Dijk databases) the amount of possible output formats has increased. TAB delimited TXT, has vanished, however.

Board Information - ASSET4 database in Datastream

New database ASSET4 is an excellent instrument to measure sustainability and governance on company level. Datastream covers the full Assets4 database.
The remaining question is "does the license of the intsitution you are" cover this full database?
Only trial and error will tell. > or not? (see bottom)
What data does the Asset4 cover?
In short ESG data, Environmental, Social and Governance.
What is the benefit?
The researcher can combine ESG data with the usual company performance data, like ROE, ROA, return and capitlization. For instance what is the relationshiop between money spent on employee salaries and company performance or money spent on environmental sustainability and  . . .

Datstream's Extranet provides nice overviews and benchmarking comparisons:

Datastream covers stock traded companies only. Do they all provide output data en the Asset4 database? The answer is no. Sometimes output says #error no output data available or NA, or even an empty cell. This does not becessarily mean that the company in question doesn't do anything, the data isn't simply there or the license doesn't cover it.(see bottom)

250 KPI (Key Performance Indicators)
Sources: Stoxx600, NASDAQ 100, Russel 1000, S&P 500, MSCI Europe, MSCI world, FTSE 100, ASX 300 and MSCI emerging markets.

What kind of data does ASSET4 cover?
Corporate governance: - Board structure - Compensation policy - Board functions - shareholders rights - vision and strategy
Social: - employment quality - health & safety - training & development - diversity - human rights - community - prod. responsibility
Environmental: - resource reduction - emissions - product innovation
Economic -client loyalty -performance -shareholder loyalty

Looking it up: equities and data types?
Q: which equities are in the constituent lists?
And if so, do they provide data, which?
A:  Self check: perform a static search and use the data type ASSET4 Company ID. If a company does not possess this ID it is not in the database.
Example: market netherlands, stock exchange Euronext amsterdam
